The winning entry for our Raven Storyboard Contest comes from Singapore by Ting Szu Kiong (szukiong). He takes a headon approach to adapting Allen’s Poem, condensing the story but staying relatively truthful to the original. Behind the stylistic and artistic drawing, there is a strong directorial sense utilizing low angles and strong compositions.

Hitchcock’s Storyboards from 13 Classic Films

Hitchcock was known for his extensive storyboarding down to the finest detail of production. He was reported to have never even bothered looking through the viewfinder, since he didn’t need to do so. Looking at his storyboards versus the finial film it’s safe to say that is a vast overstatement.

Hitchcock trained as a draughtsman and worked in advertising before his first job in the film industry; designing title cards for silent films. Perhaps this influenced his pre-visual style. While he was an experienced illustrator he always hired a storyboard artist. These included legendary artists as Saul Bass, Harold Michelson, among others.

Psycho (1960)

Saul Bass prepared storyboards for the shower scene, and was on the set during at least part of the filming. After Hitchcock’s death, Bass asserted that he had directed the scene at Hitchcock’s invitation–a claim definitively contradicted by both Janet Leigh and Assistant Director Hilton Green. Bass’s partisans have subsequently held that Hitchcock merely mechanically filmed shots already laid out by Bass. Comparing the storyboards to the filmed scene shows that to be untrue. On the other hand, the most crucial elements of the scene, such as the drain-eye matchcut and the tracking shot that follows it, are in the storyboards. That proves nothing about the author of the scene, however, since Bass drew the storyboards after extensive discussions with Hitchcock about the design of the scene.

Future Development of Celtx

Celtx 3.0
Work on the new version of the Celtx desktop software is going well. Among other things, they are adding support for Novels, a new design for the Media and Breakdown sidebar, and tackling some of the remaining bugs.

New export options will enable you to more easily share data from a Celtx Project to your team. Celtx hopes to ship version 3.0 just before (or just after) the New Year.

Mobile – Celtx Studios Integration
The Celtx Studios will soon support opening scripts and sketches directly to the iPad/iPhone.
Edits made to either type of file, while mobile, will get saved back to the Project in the Studio, providing a much better experience for Studio users.

Mobile – Celtx Script
They are adding support for additional templates (eg. AV and Stageplays) to the Celtx Script app. These too will work directly from a Celtx Studio.

Once the script is written – how do you effective communicate the visual direction of your film? The answer is storyboards – essentially a scene-by-scene visual guide to the screenplay of the film. Storyboards are a vital part of the pre-visualization process, as well as being an important tool for preproduction and on the set.

Developed in the 1930s by Walt Disney company for their animated cartoons, they grew in popularity during the early 40s. Storyboarding a film can be as simple as crudely drawn stick figures or advanced as elaborate 3D animatics with lens and motion simulators.
