Hey everyone, it’s been a really long time since I’ve last posted.

I’m starting up a news program for my University that will be airing either once a week or biweekly and will consist of a crew of about 5-8. I’ve been looking all over for legal information about broadcasting news, such as using peoples’ likenesses, filming on location, consent forms, etc. but I couldn’t really find anything.

Does anyone have any tips, advice, resources that could assist me so I can be really prepared once we start? Thanks so much FilmmakerIQ!

As long as it’s the truth you can show anything. Unless there is a legal reason, like a victim of a crime or in the case of Ryan Giggs, a Super Injunction. If it’s someone else’s footage, you have to put a disclaimer on, usually a “Pictures courtesy of so and so” in the corner.

As for shooting, keep the cameras at the same height as the anchor’s heads, and I found that putting tie-mics on them is better than a boom.

I also think that Gospel John posted a piece about diy auto-cues.

I have to say that I’m basing this very much on my experiences of the UK. I don’t know what it’s like for the rest of the world.

Actually, I could just say Youtube Charlie Brooker, he made a whole series about how the news works.
