Special effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull and his Entertainment Effects Group team created thousands of acid-etched brass miniatures lit from below with hundreds of bundles of fiber-optic lights, shot in forced-perspective through layers of smoke to create layers of light refraction, creating depth.

Lucie & Simon endeavor to photograph great cities and optically remove all but a few traces of live human activity.

How was this done? At first I thought it was a matter of meticulous Photoshopping but the reality is much simpler than that. By shooting a very long exposure and using a Neutral Density Filters “normally used by NASA for analyzing stars” all the movement in the shot blurs out of the exposure leaving only the things that are still.

This would be a great way to create matte plates for an post-apocalyptic film.
