If you have the time and some basic drawing abilities a storyboard is a great way to previsualize your movie and save a lot of time (and money) on your shoot.
It’s not indispensable, but it certainly helps a whole lot. I know I wouldn’t have been able to pull off a narrative music video I made without a storyboard, both in terms of telling the story withing the boundaries that the song imposed and to organize its VFX heavy nature.
