The Basic Tips on Focusing
The Basic Filmmaker explains the fundamental trick of zooming in to achieve focus when your working with a zoom lens designed for video. When working with photographic zoom lens and DSLR, use the digital zoom feature as some zoom lens don’t hold their focus when zooming.
The magnification function on a DSLR is good, but depending on the model of camera you’re using, can make it incredibly grainy. You’ll need steady hands, too, to really bring your subject into crystal-clear focus.
I recommend you use a loupe, even if you have to make one, to magnify the image as it currently is, focus to the best of your ability, THEN use the digital magnification.
The idea isn’t to shoot with the zoom check, only set focus then switch it off and shoot normally.
