The hotly anticipated Tom Hooper-directed Les Miserable opens on Christmas Day 2012, but here’s a sneak peak at 5 scenes including the vocal talents of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Samantha Barks, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne.

You may recall the big marketing hubbub about recording the vocals live – here’s our first chances to see how that’s working out.

Personally, I think the soloists sound fantastic. Only Hugh Jackman’s clip of “Who am I?” has a little bit of a boxy room sound that sounds like it was recorded on a big set (it’s incredibly slight and I’d probably forget it if I wasn’t listening for it). The chorus in the “At the End of the Day” on the other hand doesn’t sound quite right – something’s a little off in the mix and balance of the women singing. It’s not a perfect blend but it sounds live and real. This may be an early mix and I will reserve judgement till I can hear it in a theater with some proper speakers.
