Leon Vitali served as Stanley Kubrick’s casting director, costume director, and personal assistant from his work on Barry Lyndon until his death. He is currently overseeing the Blu-ray box collection of many of Kubrick’s finest works and he sat down for an interview, answering the question why Kubrick doesn’t include outtakes in his DVDs.
…I think he was pragmatic as a person, and he never confused the sentimentality of anything with the facts of how something happened. So he could feel bad for somebody, but you could also say, “that happened because,” or “that could have happened because,” and I think that shows very strongly in his work. And you know, a lot of people said, oh, he was cold, but I don’t find that at all. The thing with his films is that he’s saying, look what can happen if.
