The Waterphone: The Instrument that Scores your Nightmares
Ever wonder what instrument is making all those creepy noises you hear so often in horror films? It’s the Waterphone a type of atonal acoustic musical instrument constructed largely of a stainless steel resonator “bowl” with a cylindrical “neck”, which may or may not contain a small amount of water, and with brass rods around the rim of the bowl (Wikipedia). Here’s a bunch of videos highlighting some of the sounds of this bizarre instrument.
Sweet Dreams.
That’s just nightmarish. Cool looking instrument though.
As a correction to your statement about the waterphone being used for nightmarish music – it is also used for mystery, and science fiction and other unusual movies and TV scores. For instance, the sound of the waterphone was used in “Young Guns” when the western gang all took peyote and rode the horses backwards.
That’s not a correction but an addendum.
