Edward Jay Epstein explores how the changing financial landscape is making it harder to get small independent films funded.
The result was that indie producers had to base their ability to borrow money almost entirely on the foreign market. Yet foreign distributors then greatly reduced the amount they were willing to commit because they could no longer be confident that indie films would have the publicity and hype that goes with an American release.

Very Educational!
yes Fox Atomic is gone, but Fox 2000 and Searchlight remain. And rogue/relativity is doing quite well. And a lot of the Fine Line people went to PMK*BNC. Yes it is harder, but it still can be done. And alternate releasing methods are becoming easier to access. What it will take is a lot more information and knowledge of distribution to even gain a chance to have your film released. Self releasing through AMC and other theater chains is also a possibility.
What could the industry do to encourage more indie funding?
A damn good read.
