I don’t think that’s at all what he said in the forum thread. I read 31 pages of the thread (I think that’s how many were in there). It starts here:

It’s still going to be a 3K camera body that runs under $6k as currently priced. That’s not in the independent filmmaker’s budget?
He said they were avoiding the high-volume production, and producing professional gear. I think a serious independent filmmaker still constitutes part of that professional market. Right? Plenty of indie filmmakers are shooting on RED today.
I’ve been hard on RED before in a number of ways, but I think those conclusions are a little over the top.
If you want to say RED is no longer targeting the consumer/prosumer audience, I can buy that. “Strictly high-end pros” is a bit of an exaggeration.
It’s about FREAKIN’ time! I gave up on the “Scarlet” the moment I heard about the Canon 5D! But for 2 or 3 Years They had me (and I bet a bunch of other people too) Excited, Saving, Waiting and at the edge of my seat with their false “Release Dates” and “Low Price” for the Scarlet!!! Finally the gig is up!
Well first, Don’t blame the audience, you can’t turn your back on a device that was never delivered. I have been hanging on every word of Scarlet. But now economy’s are tight and people need to get work done. No Doubt though if Scarlet happens it will allow for productions based on RED to have 2-3 or more cameras again lowering costs for production. For me I had hoped to get into 3-4K capture in the sub $10,000 range and leverage my 20K+ of Canon lenses use that to evolve my work to all Red production… I had to give up waiting now I use combo of Canon bodies and GoPro HD’s. I’ll keep my eye on Red in another few years the economy will improve and I’ll see if I can get into it again…. though I feel a bit stung by Red’s Sour Grapes.
