iPad DSLR Slate app + Canon 7D
If you’re shooting sync sound with a 7D the DSLR slate app for the iPad is a BIG help! Go check it out.
The first slate designed specifically for the DSLR filmmaker, DSLR Slate provides unique inputs like ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Lens, White Balance, and many more. The biggest standout feature is the “quick burst” mode which flashes not only the most common but ALL your data to the camera within about 2 seconds just before the A/V sync. This app was designed for the iPad but retains 100% functionality on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
These videos are walkthroughs of the universal app DSLR Slate 1.0.
If only I had an iPad
I wonder if it costs anything
$4.99

I should also point out that a normal Slate with those type of features would run you over $1000. Considering you can buy a iPad starting at $500 its a good deal.
So where are they getting the time code from (which should be the sound t.c. if it was a film shoot. How are they locking or jamming to the T.C. or is it free running and in that case not usable at all for syncing in telecine.
But it is a hell of an idea for 2nd Unit and a lot of other uses.
I added a third video (which is the second one) that better explains the time code and other features.
Wow…
The problem with a traditional dry erase marker clapboards is it requires a full time person to keep it updated. On a tiny set, this can EASILY go untended. Not to mention that dry erase markers are dirty and get everywhere.
This looks like a great solution.
Jam syncing is a little beyond what this can do, but as I’m manually syncing audio clips right now – it sure would have been nice to have…
Here you can read one of the developers discussing adding jam syncing in the future:

I am wondering the next generation of ipad wiht more apps.
Just used this on a shoot, it was a fun gadget. I am not sure it saved any more time than a traditional slate – probably not – but it did allow the non essentials to sit around and play Angry Birds in between takes
