3D Still Image Effect Tutorial Using Photoshop and Apple Motion
Posted on July 16, 2010 in Digital Effects | 5 Comments
This tutorial gives step-by-step instructions on using Photoshop and Apple Motion to create the “The Kid Stays in the Picture” effect. The name of the effect is from the documentary film that extensively applies this motion graphic to still images. Essentially a still image is separated into layers which are moved along the z-axis. Movement is introduced via animation… adding depth and giving the impression of 3D to the still (the effect sometimes referred to as 2.5D).

Man, even Ken Burns is going 3D these days.
This effect is much older than that documentary; sometimes a little time consuming, but really simple – if I can do it, anyone can!
Wow, that is awesome. Thank you so much for sharing!
nice work, and great effect!
I tried the effect and it worked for the first couple of times but the image began to smudge and distort as I tried to rescale it in Motion. Do you know how I go about fixing it?
