I am doing a master's in documentary and using a T2i with open source software on Linux; KDEnlive. The latest version has proxy clips which is a good workaround. Many ppl seemed to be so annoyed at the latest FCP release that I thought it was probably worth gaining the additional computer literacy that is needed to use Linux. (it's more than for Mac or Windows, both of which I have used, but not that much more. I'm not a programmer or anything...) And it's totally free, of course. There are some very powerful tools on Linux including ffmpeg for transcoding tasks and suchlike, for which you need to be able to use a terminal window, but the code is all out there if you Google it. Very easy to use with a bit of practice. Kdenlive is still in daily development, and there are feedback forums where people can make requests for future versions.

Just a thought

As of today, Wednesday, June 23rd, has technology updated/simplified the whole workflow
process of getting footage from a DSLR camera into FCP? When all this hoopla started, I was under the impression that all you needed was a card reader via USB or Firewire into your computer - - the capture was easy - and you start editing - no logging, no batch capture, etc, etc. Now you're talking about FIRST/BEFORE you edit, you have to go into COMPRESSOR FIRST to TRANSCODE - - is THAT the only way? If not, NO STEPS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED in the "Camera to Computer" process... I am new to this, and am considering buying a DSLR, but there seems to be a lot of quirks! - - true or not? Sure appreciate your personal insight on this matter.... Thanks

Thanks so much for this David.

Is there any chance you could do the same tutorial for those of us with Sony Vegas? Please??

I cant find anything on the net as good as this tutorial and I am really having problems getting my Canon 7D footage into Sony Vegas.

Look forward to hearing from you
