…What do you have in your bag of marketing tricks? And how have these “tricks” served your pursuit? Unlike some insanely competitive actors I know, I like sharing my tricks, and I like learning new tricks. After graduating from college, I realized pretty quickly that my cover letter–writing skills were, apparently, better than most. I remember how actors who had been in the business for a while tried to discourage me from doing mailings for representation. Of course, I don’t advocate mass mailings—targeted mailings, yes—but I didn’t have much experience right out of college, so I threw my net wider than I might today. “We don’t know anybody who got an agent from a mailing,” my actor friends said. “Agents don’t even open their mail,” another friend told me. You’re wasting your money, they warned.
