This PC World article focus on “consumer camcorders,” but it contains some useful basics for new filmmakers wanting to know what first camera they should buy.
If the only video you shoot is clips of your dog for YouTube, most any camcorder will do. But if you’re recording your child’s first steps or daughter’s wedding, you want some assurance that it will still be viewable in 20 or 30 years, when you’ll get the most pleasure out of watching it.

About 2 years or so ago I was dogged on for defending the HDV format… It will disappear in months, it’s crap, it’s… blah blah blah.
Now this article says it’s probably the best format.
Yeah I know this article is geared at consumers. And frankly, having working with the EX1 and Sony’s XDCAM formats, I see some issues arising with the HDV codec – still, HDV is going to be around for quite some time
