Dealing With Investors

Michael Bergmann offers a great advice on finding and dealing with investors in his article “Money Matters” for Filmmaker Magazine.

…When I set out to make my first feature – nearly seven years ago now – I went to a lot of panel discussions to hear independent filmmakers tell stories of how they got the money for their films. By now, thanks to the commitment of independent filmmakers to share information, there are many such stories available. Filmmakers can learn how others have leveraged family money, raised funds from people or organizations sympathetic to the cause their film espouses, raised money from dentists and businessmen or won the backing of famous actors and film companies. Less discussed are the general lessons learned from dealing with these investors. So I thought it might be useful to write down the principles that have emerged for me in the years I’ve spent raising money for independent films – and spending it.
